About the School of International Education
Established in June 2009, the School of International Education is dedicated to administrating foreign-aid training programs as well as the education of international students such as the enrollment, teaching affairs, daily routine, and other services involved in international education. The administrative organization of the School is made up of the CPC Branch Secretary, the Dean, the Vice Dean, Office of Administration, Student Affairs Office, Education Administration Office and Office of Training and Development.
Actually, since 1999 SMU has began to enroll international students for foreign-aid training programs; from 2005, the University has opened the English-medium MBBS Programs (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) for international students; in 2006, it has begun to enroll oversea students on Chinese Government Scholarship; in 2007, its undergraduate education program for international students who pursue degrees in clinical medicine has been officially recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education; in 2008, it became one of the ten education aid centers affiliated to the Ministry of Education; in 2009, it began to serve as the honorary vice-president of China Association for International Education (CAFSA); in 2014, it started to serve as the president of Guangdong Association for International Education and won the award as "A leader in International Education" conferred by CAFSA. All these facts prove that SMU has been well recognized by the Chinese higher education system for its excellent work on international education.
In the last decade, SMU has made great progress in international education. As of November 2015, the total number of international students at SMU amounts to 1,200 from 115 countries and regions around the world. The following entries represent just a sampling of their academic achievements: 86 of them have won the Chinese Government Scholarship for International Students, 220 have won the Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship, 110 have won the Southern Medical University Scholarship (academic) and the Southern Medical University Scholarship (for monitors and CR). In addition, international students of SMU have also engaged themselves in extra-curricular activities. In 2013, the SMU sports team made up of international students took part in the “China Exploration—Sunshine Sports and Culture Journey for International Students” and won a third prize in Guangdong Province. In the Competition of the China Exploration for the 3rd division held in Wuyishan City, SMU ranked first in the basketball game and ended up fifth. In 2015, the international students of SMU reaped two third prizes after attending the “Win-Win Development: Guangdong and the World 2015 & Charming Guangdong, Lifting My Dream. International Students Gala”.
Since 1999, the University has been appointed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Commerce to undertake foreign-aid training programs. Up to now, SMU has undertook nearly 90 phases of educational aid, training a total of 2029 health officials and technicians from 101 countries and regions. In recent years, the University has taken on 80% of the short-term foreign-aid training programs initiated by Guangdong Province. The training programs cover 28 medical subjects in five languages namely English, French, Russian, Arabic and Portuguese. Since 2015, the University has begun to run the Master of Public Health Program (English-medium) as a part of its foreign-aid program. The Program opens to international students and produces high-caliber graduates in the field of public health.
Actually, international education has featured in the development of SMU. Majors available for international students cover various disciplines such as Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Pharmacology, Medical Examination and Combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. The University has developed a complete cultivation system for international students at different levels. This system focuses on medical degree education including Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral degree programs while incorporating short-term training programs and non-degree education programs. Currently, English-medium courses are available for international students who choose MBBS Programs and MPH programs. It is also worth mentioning that the medical education of SMU has been well recognized by WHO.
